Based on Victor Hugo's novel, this legendary silent classic from director Paul Leni stars Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine, a Scottish nobleman's son whose face was surgically altered as punishment after his father refused to vow loyalty to England's King James II. Wearing a hideous, perpetual grin (which later inspired the look of "Batman" villain the Joker), Gwynplaine becomes a clown in a traveling circus and falls in love with a blind woman. Mary Philbin, Olga Baclanova also star.
