The Rising Place

"The Rising Place" follows the close relationship of two young women, each of a different race, and their struggle to find purpose in their lives during a time of social injustice and world war. When Virginia (Frances Fisher) discovers a stack of letters over half a century old, she unlocks the story of Emily (Laurel Holloman), a young woman living in Hamilton, Mississippi, during the Second World War. In a time when a woman's place is in the home, Emily ventures out and falls in love with a young soldier, eventually carrying his baby out of wedlock. Despite the disapproval of society, and with the support of friends, Wilma (Elise Neal) and Will (Mark Webber), Emily follows her heart to overcome the prejudice of her time.
