Sanshiro Sugata

Based on a best-seller, the debut film from master auteur, Akira Kurosawa, tells the beginning of Judo in Japan. The eponymous protagonist is on a quest for knowledge when he stumbles on a couple of jujitsu bullies being beaten by a man with a new fighting style - Sugata becomes the man's faithful protege. Filmed as Japan was entering the war, it was intended as propaganda, but it's also a telling start to Kurosawa's illustrious 60 year career.
