Lackawanna Blues
Based on a one-man show by Ruben Santiago-Hudson (played by Hill Harper) this is the inspiring story of Nanny Crosby (S. Epatha Merkerson) a big-hearted woman who ran a rooming house that became a hub for the African-American community in Lackawanna, Upstate New York from the 1940s right though to the 1960s. At once funny, heart-warming and sad, this HBO drama won Emmys and Golden Globes for both Merkerson and director, George C. Wolfe. A huge ensemble cast includes Mos Def, Louis Gossett Jr, Jeffrey Wright and many more.
