Stella (Natasha Richardson) is the neglected wife of Max (Hugh Bonneville), the new Deputy Superintendent of a maximum security psych hospital on the outskirts of 1950s London. They live on-site and Stella soon develops a passionate attraction for artist Edgar Stark (Marton Csokas), incarcerated for the brutal murder of his wife. An intense and compelling adaptation of Patrick McGrath's novel, scripted by Patrick Marber ('Closer'), also stars Ian McKellen as the voyeuristic Dr Cleave.
