A dynamic, though faithful interpretation of one of Dicken's best-loved stories is Polanski's follow-up to his Oscar-winning, 'The Pianist'. Barney Clark plays the young orphan who is sent to a dire workhouse and punished for asking for more gruel. Suggested by Polanski's wife as something their kids might like, both their children have minor parts in the film, Morgane as the farmer's daughter and Elvis as a boy with a hoop. Ben Kingsley is inspired as the streetkids' grizzled governor, Fagin.
