The long-awaited and controversial third instalment of Deepa Mehta's Elemental Trilogy, the film production was shut down in 2000 by Hindu fundamentalists who felt it was overly critical of the faith. According to sacred texts, widows must remain faithful to their husband's until they themselves die, but child bride Chuyia is just 8 years old when she is widowed in 1930s colonial India, and sent to the 'widow's house' in the holy city of Varanasi. A captivating story, stunningly filmed. English and Hindi versions were shot back to back, both are available on this 2 disc set.
