Moolaade

Written and directed by 81-year-old master filmmaker Ousmane Sembene, this incredible film tells the story of four girls desperate to avoid the 'purification ritual', otherwise known as female circumcision. In their small African village, they seek sanctuary (moolade), with a woman who once shielded her own daughter from this devastating 'tradition'. A harrowing, yet inspiring ode to female empowerment on the mother continent, that stunned film festival audiences worldwide.
