A Little Trip to Heaven

Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur's English-language debut is a black humour-tinged noir that stars Forest Whitaker as an insurance investigator looking into the million dollar claim of a car accident victim whose sole beneficiary is a penniless sister (Julia Stiles). Set in the barren and bitterly cold wastelands of '80s Minnesota (though shot mostly in Iceland) the film is brooding and visually engaging even if the plot is sometimes difficult to follow. Also stars Peter Coyote, Jeremy Renner and Phyllida Law.
