Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles

Ken Takakura gives a career-defining performance as an old Chinese fisherman who has been estranged from his son for many years. When he receives a call from his daughter-in-law in Tokyo telling him his son is ill, he decides to make the journey there, only to find the young man refuses to see him. However there may be something special he can do to repair past hurts. This small but masterful film from seasoned director Zhang Yimou is an intimately moving and perceptively humourous portrait of a damaged father-son dynamic, set largely against the stunning scenic backdrop of Southern China.
