Beginning in World War II-era Lithuania, young Hannibal (Gaspard Ulliel) is forced to watch his family brutally massacred. After a brief spell in a Soviet orphanage he flees to Paris in search of a long-lost uncle, finding instead his uncle's widow, Gong Li, who accepts the troubled boy into her home. Academically gifted and inwardly seething with nightmarish visions of vengeance he enrols in medical school, honing the skills he'll need to exact his own brand of horrific justice...Thomas Harris adapted his own novel for this peek into the childhood of everyone's favourite cannibal, however casting Lecter in the role of crusading Nazi-hunter and a lack of the steely-eyed Anthony Hopkins don't help this film in the credibility stakes.
