An astonishing and lovingly-made portrait of cult indie-pop singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston whose artistic talent went hand in hand with manic depression and frequent breakdowns. Bolstered by clips from Johnston's own extensive home movie footage, Jeff Feuerzeig has created a hugely insightful and sensitive film on the overlapping natures of mental illness and creativity. Though Johnston's music may not be to everyone's taste, as a documentary subject he is undoubtedly rivetting, from his fundamentalist Christian upbringing, to his hey-day in '80s Austin, to his medicated middle age in West Virginia. Winner of the Directing Award at Sundance, and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.
