The Quiet Duel

Toshiro Mifune's second film with director Akira Kurosawa casts him in the role of a young war-time doctor, who accidentally contracts syphillis while operating on a patient. Unable to face his fiancee with the embarrassing news, he dumps her without explanation, but ultimately he must choose whether to keep his secret or to admit the truth and save the lives of others. A powerful moral drama, and an early and often overlooked flim in the Kurosawa cannon. Also stars the excellent Takeshi Shimura.
