Based on Tom Perrota's novel, and adapted for the screen by himself and director Todd Field, this darkly wry drama of suburban malaise, judgement and dirty little secrets features Kate Winslet as a bored housewife who begins an affair with local hunk and stay-at-home dad, Brad (Patrick Wilson). As they play out their adolescent fantasies by the pool, the arrival of a convicted paedophile (Jackie Earle Haley) back in the neighbourhood causes shock and indignation in this hugely absorbing social drama, narrated with sardonic humour by Will Lyman, (a voice which may be familiar from years of documentary work). Jennifer Connelly also stars as Brad's wife. Field and Perrotta were nominated for a Best Screenplay Adaptation Oscar and Winslet and Haley also received nominations for their engrossing performances.
