Magnolia

Paul Thomas Anderson's third feature film is an exhilarating, almost reckless display of cinematic ambition. Weaving together more than a dozen characters in several intertwining stories, Anderson creates a mosaic drama that deals with chance, loneliness, love, forgiveness and really odd weather. Through stylish camera movement, rapid-fire editing and a pop song score by Aimee Mann, the director builds each major character's arc to an emotional breakthrough or breakdown. The exceptional ensemble cast helps immeasurably in Anderson's bold attempt to create a universal portrait of need. With Jeremy Blackman, Tom Cruise, Melinda Dillon, Philip Baker Hall, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly and Jason Robards.
