Paul Newman discovered a life-long passion for race-car driving while making this film about a successful driver, Frank Capua, who falls in love (with his real-life wife Joanne Woodward), then allows his relationship to fall into neglect as he spends so much time at the track. Up and comer Luther Erding (Rober Wagner) is not only threatening Capua's number one racing status, but also muscling in on his wife. Richard Thomas also stars as the step-son caught in the middle.
