An unsusual blend of surrealism and satire, this political allegory is set in a fictional totalitarian country ruled by a vain and heartless dictator, where free speech has become a crime. Ralph Fiennes is a servant of the regime who finds his inner sense of right and wrong being challenged, while Donald Sutherland is the poet/freedom fighter he is assigned to guard in prison, kept in the most diabolical of conditions. An ambitious statement with hints of its cinematic predecessors 'Brazil' and '1984', this UK/USA co-production also stars Lara Flynn Boyle, Tom Hollander and Don Warrington.
