A.K.A. 'Grindhouse: Death Proof'. Tarantino and talented pal Robert Rodriguez had set out to make a nostalgic '70s double-bill (complete with trailers between the two features), but Americans didn't take to the concept so the directors re-cut their films for individual release. Tarantino's half of the workload, "Death Proof", sees an excellent Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike, hunting down two quartets of nubile young women (one lead by New Zealand's extraordinary stunt woman Zoe Bell) in his fortified classic car. Overflowing with violence, faux-scratched film strips and a hint of exploitation, this is a fitting homage to the 'grindhouse' genre and is classic, loquacious Tarantino. The companion piece is Rodriguez's "Planet Terror".
