A transcendent meditation on love and religion, filmed in Northern Mexico by native auteur Carlos Reygadas ('Battle in Heaven'). The story revolves around Johan, a member of a religious sect known as the Mennonites who live a simple and reclusive life. When Johan begins having an adulterous affair he is morally and emotionally torn apart; but even confessing his sins seems to bring him no relief. Visually arresting and with an authentic tone, helped by the fact that Reygadas chose to cast the film with actual Mennonites who speak a German dialect known as Plattdeutsch. Consequently Mexico's entry for the 80th Oscars was their first not in the Spanish language. Scooped film festival awards worldwide, including the Jury Prize at Cannes.
