Funny Games

Michael Haneke remakes his own controversial suburban ennui-meets-home invasion thriller with Naomi Watts and Tim Roth as the bored couple who find themselves at the mercy of the merciless. A twisted, satirical commentary on middle class malaise and the new breed of ruthlessly coldhearted youths, Haneke is not known for pulling any punches in his cinema and he described his original film as "one which confronted us with our own complicity in violence as spectacle". Remaining faithful to the first film, Watts and Roth turn in excellent performances in this stomach-knotting thriller.
