Michael Haneke ('Funny Games', 'Code Unknown', etc) does not make films with easy answers. 'The White Ribbon' offers a view of a small pre-WWI German village in which strange, violent acts are beginning to take place. First they could be accidents, coincidences maybe - but quickly it turns into something more sinister as the events seem to be planned punishments (barns are burned down, horses tripped, men beaten) and suspicions escalate. The town is about to reach boiling point, and Germany is about to plunge into two World Wars of hateful violence... Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the Oscars and BAFTAS and winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
