By early 1940 the Second World War is well under way, the might of the German Army has crushed and is occupying Poland, Denmark, Norway, and the Low Countries culminating in the attack on France. In May 1940, 338,000 British and French troops are evacuated from Dunkirk on the French coast, just prior to the total collapse of France. Before invading Britain, the Luftwaffe needs to dominate the skies as they have done all over Europe, but conspicuously fail to do so and are beaten by the RAF and invasion plans are shelved.
