For decades Rio de Janeiro has ranked as one of the most violent cities in the world. Brutal drug lords patrol the favelas, and gun battles with police often claim innocent bystanders. In response, the Brazilian government created a crack paramilitary force, known as BOPE, who handle the streets in their own way, corrupted by drugs and money. Based on the accounts of a 19-year veteran of the Special Police Operations Battalion, and scripted by Braulio Mantovani ('CIty of God'), this explosive and graphically violent film was a hit in its homeland, and won the Golden Bear at the Berlin FIlm Festival.
