Filmmaker Larry Clark ('Kids', 'Bully') again tackles the inner workings of urban youth culture in this comedy drama about a handful of Salvadorian emigres living in South Central L.A.. They stand out like sore thumbs, not so much because of their nationality, but because instead of getting into the ubiquitous hip-hop culture, they favour old-school punk. However, if Jonathan and his skateboarding mates feel out of place there, just wait till they go on a pilgramage to a legendary skate spot in Beverly Hills. Clark met the actors on a photo shoot in 2003, got to know them, and gradually developed a screenplay around their lives. The use of non-actors and a casual shooting style brings a certain documentary aesthetic to the action, but the story itself is fictional and uses more humour than Clark's previous films.
