Beauty in Trouble

Using recent events in Prague to drive his narrative, Czech director Jan Hrebejk ('Divided We Fall') sets his engrossing romantic dramedy in the wake of devastating floods that washed through the capital in 2002. Near-destitute, a young husband and father resorts to stripping stolen cars to make a crust, only to have his wife walk out with the kids in protest. Marcela takes refuge with her mother, but the presence of her mean-spirited step-father makes life difficult, until a chance encounter with an elderly man has Marcela tossing up whether to go back to the man she loves, or secure her future with a kindly old stranger. Nominated for four Czech film awards, and winner of three including Best Actor and Best Actress. Inspired by the poem by Robert Graves.
