Managing to breathe some fresh life into the prison break genre, this rousing thriller employs a flashback/flashforward narrative that keeps the suspense on high and the audience guessing right to the end. Brian Cox plays institutionalised convict Frank Perry, who after 14 years behind bars suddenly has a reason to leave in a hurry. Along for the ride are effete prison boss Rizza (Damian Lewis), his junkie brother, and a thuggish thief played by an uncharacteristically buff Joseph Fiennes. Writer/director Rupert Wyatt wrote the film specifically with Cox in mind, and he pulls out a rivetting, powerhouse performance. Shot in Dublin, and with a blistering score to match the pacy editing, this taut escape yarn is one to see.
