Based on a true story, petty criminal Henri Charriere, a.k.a. Papillon (Steve McQueen), is framed for murder and transported for life to the penal colony of French Guiana. Imprisoned on infamous Devil's Island, Papillon, together with fellow prisoner Louis Dega (Dustin Hoffman) ceaselessly works on a means of escape, his spirit refusing to be broken by the savage and humiliating treatment of their captors.
