The Anton Chekhov Collection

This collection includes productions of Chekhov's greatest plays. The one-act "The Proposal" (1959) finds rich families building wealth through marriage; a mistaken identity disrupts "The Wedding" (1961); "The Cherry Orchard" might be up for auction, but it's the Russian aristocracy that's in trouble, in a 1962 version starring John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, and Judi Dench, and a 1981 revival with Dench and Timothy Spall; the return of "Uncle Vanya" sets off a tragicomic chain of events, with a 1970 TV version starring Anthony Hopkins and a 1991 studio production with David Warner; "The Three Sisters" (1970), played by Janet Suzman, Eileen Atkins, and Michele Dotrice, dream of one day returning to Moscow; teacher "Platonov" (1971) finds his high ideals appealing to many women in this filming with Rex Harrison and Clive Revill; Patrick Stewart reveals "An Artist's Story" (1974) in this short drama debating moral values; "The Wood Demon" (1974), an earlier version of "Uncle Vanya," stars Ian Holm and Francesca Annis; and "The Seagull" (1978) finds a writer falling for a young actress; Anthony Bate, Stephen Rea, Michael Gambon star.
