Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis (Zorba the Greek), this adaptation of the classic final drama by playwright Anton Chekhov takes a dark look at Russian aristocratic family life. Madame Ranevskaya (Rampling) returns to her decaying estate after an exile in Paris, her dissolute brother Gaev (Bates), insecure adopted daughter Varya and dotty butler Feers are ill-prepared for the grim financial realities that threaten their existence.
