Dutch coming-of-age drama based on the children's novel 'Oorlogswinter' by Jan Terlouw. January, 1945. During the last winter of WWII, Nazi occupied Holland lies under a blanket of snow. Food is scarce with many people heading east in a desperate attempt to find sustenance. When 13-year-old Michiel (Martijn Lakemeier) becomes involved in the Resistance, he learns that good and evil often sit side by side without anyone noticing. Hugely successful in the Netherlands, the story lets us feel the gruesome, but also adventurous aspect of growing up under the circumstances of war. This was the official Dutch entry for the 2010 Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film shortlist.
