You could say Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti) earned the right to be a cynical, hard-drinking S.O.B. - except that most of his problems seem to be mostly brought on by his own questionable choices, like ditching his second wife (Minnie Driver) on their wedding day to hit on the woman (Rosamund Pike) who will become his third bride. But there are yet more comic twists and difficult hardships to come in this quick-witted adaptation of the Mordecai Richler novel. With Rachelle Lefevre, Scott Speedman, and Dustin Hoffman.
