The Heart of the Matter

A faithful adaptation of the Graham Greene novel starring Trevor Howard as Scobie, an assistant police commissioner posted in Sierra Leone in World War 2, where he has difficulties dealing with his Catholic guilt when he starts a passionate affair with a 19 year-old girl. Exploring familiar Greene themes such as religion and work politics, the film co-stars Elizabeth Allan and Maria Schell as the wronged wife and the hard done-by mistress respectively. The least-known of the British Graham Greene adaptations, this classic eagerly awaits rediscovery.
