House of Games

Playright David Mamet's directorial film debut is this superbly crafted story about an uptight psychiatrist (Lindsay Crouse) who goes thrill-seeking with a sophisticated con artist (Joe Mantegna). Filled with red herrings and unexpected twists, Mamet's ingenious screenplay imparts a keen sense of psychology doused with a hilarious and wry sense of humor. The acting is outstanding; Crouse is eerily emotionless as the famous shrink and Mantegna is both charming and alluring as the smooth-operating grifter.
