A delightful tale of a young landowner who tries to obtain an audience with King Louis XVI in order to get grant money to drain a swamp. He soon discovers that the King grants favours to those who display a ready and preferably savage wit. Charles Berling, Jean Rochefort and Fanny Ardant star in this excellent, acid-tongued French satire. Opening the 1996 Cannes Festival, it was nominated for the Golden Palm among many other notable nods including Best Foreign Film Oscar and Golden Globe, and it won the BAFTA for Best Foreign Language Film.
