Set in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, writer/director Edward Yang's acclaimed drama juxtaposes old and new, love and heartbreak as it follows the emotional travails of a family: the businessman father, tempted by the reappearance of an old flame; the mother who despairs over her own mother's illness; a daughter who seeks romance with a movie-obsessed neighbour; and a precocious son confused by the world around him.
