When her mother, charismatic and sociopathic poet Michelle Pfeiffer, is sent to jail for killing her lover in a fit of rage, teenager Alison Lohman passes through an array of foster homes - from topless dancer-turned-born-again Christian Robin Wright Penn to B-movie actress Renee Zellweger - as she struggles to find her own identity.
