Catch-22

Joseph Heller's modern-classic novel about the absurdity of war for the common man draws heavily on his own experiences as a WWII bombadier. The title was originally to be 'Catch 18', but publishers thought it would be confused with Leon Uris' war novel, 'Mila 18', so after '11' and '14' were also rejected, it was the phrase 'Catch 22' that became part of our everyday lexicon. The book was adapted for the screen by actor/writer Buck Henry who made several changes, though apparently Heller approved of the movie version which stars Alan Arkin as the beleagured Yossarian, alongside Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin, Art Garfunkel, Orson Welles, Jon Voight, Martin Sheen, Anthony Perkins and Bob Newhart.
