Yesterday

The first major feature film to be made entirely in the Zulu language, writer/director Darrell Roodt returned to his homeland to tell a truly African story. Living in the majestic South African landscape, Yesterday is a wife and mother who finds she has become sick with 'the virus' having contracted HIV from her husband. She is determined not to succumb to the disease until she sees her daughter, Beauty, go to school and it is this strength along with Roodt's compassionate and humanizing eye that make this the powerful and emotionally involving film that it is. Nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2005.
