This superb adaptation of Arthur Miller's play set with absolute detail in the 17th century tells of a young girl's (Winona Ryder) involvement with a married man (Daniel Day Lewis) and her playing at witchcraft with friends in the woods, sending a puritan New England town witch-hunting. When the play was first produced in 1953 it was considered to be a scathing commentary on McCarthyism.
