Kevin Spacey's unusual ode to crooner Bobby Darin is a stylised, though warts-and-all, portrayal of a man who simply wanted to be bigger than Sinatra. Given that Darin died at 37 and Spacey was 45 when he played the role, there is a fair bit of squinting required to accept Spacey as a fresh-faced 22-year-old singing 'Splish Splash', but the plot harnesses the concept of an older Darin reminiscing with his boyhood self to reasonable effect. Kate Bosworth plays Darin's first wife, Sandra Dee, and among other friends and family are Brenda Blethyn as his doting 'mother', John Goodman as the manager, Bob Hoskins as brother-in-law and personal asisstant and Greta Scacchi passes through as Dee's mother.
