Mel Gibson's Mayan epic was overshadowed by the director's personal antics, but this hugely-scaled mythological tale is a vivid and ferocious window on a civilisation in its dying days. While the film hints at various explanations for the Mayans' sudden demise, and is full of authentic touches from the design to the untrained actors, this is ultimately a summer blockbuster with subtitles, a wildly violent chase movie through the rainforests of an ancient, and doomed, culture.
