The de-humanising effects of war are graphically illustrated through the disintegration of one man into psychosis, as the writer of 'Training Day' makes his directorial debut with this intense drama. Christian Bale is characteristically rivetting as an unstable Gulf War vet, dedicated to the oath he swore to protect his fellow Americans, who tries to join the LAPD, but is rejected on psychological grounds. Instead he decides to take his own violent, and increasingly chaotic, brand of justice directly to the mean streets of South Central with his best buddy, Mike (Freddy Rodriguez), who finds the man he used to know has fundamentally changed.
