Pedro Almodovar's 16th feature film stars Penelope Cruz as a hard-working janitor, supporting a daughter and a layabout husband in Madrid. Her own mother died several years back, in their hometown near La Mancha, but now a neighbour has spotted the ghostly matriarch (played by Carmen Maura), back from the grave to comfort her doubting and troubled offspring. Another relatively subdued, though intimately powerful and humourous film about mothers and daughters, from the Spanish maestro.
