Curse of the Golden Flower
Zhang Yimou's characteristically lush historical melodrama, set near the end of theTang Dynasty, with Chow Yun-Fat as the Emperor whose wife (Gong Li) has become disillusioned in their marriage and taken a lover - her stepson. Her husband decides on a plan to slowly driver her insane with poison, but he needs the cooperation of his physician who finds himself in quite a dilemma as his daughter is in love with the Crown Prince! This tragedy of Shakespearean proportions is a colour-drenched visual feast that mostly feeds off the family drama, though the two main battle set-pieces are spectacular.
