The Lives of Others

This skilfully-crafted thriller, deserving winner of the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, is an intelligent and potent blend of political history and personal danger taking place during the repressive era of the notorious East German Secret Service - the Stasi. Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe) is a true believer in the system, spying dispassionately on whomever he's told to, until one particular case begins to spark questions in his mind. Superbly acted and gripping from start to finish, this is a timely indictment of governments that oppress their citizens with fear and control.
