Winner of five Japanese Oscars including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay, this is the true story of a small mining town in Japan whose fortunes took a downward turn at the end of the Korean war, when the demand for coal went into a sharp decline. In an attempt to revive the local economy the women of the town decide to learn hula dancing in the hopes of setting up an Hawaiian tourist attraction! At first the Tokyo urbanite who comes to teach them the hip-swinging dance of the Pacific seems like a fish out of water, but she soon instils her students with the confidence they need to boost their struggling community.
