On the first of February 2002, journalist Daniel Pearl was brutally murdered after being kidnapped by an extremist political group in Pakistan. The world was shocked by this profoundly pointless and horrifically public act of violence. Michael Winterbottom's film is based on the incredible memoir by Pearl's widow, Mariane, played here by Angelina Jolie whose partner Brad Pitt co-produced. It traces the reasons for Pearl's presence in Karachi, the weeks of intense effort by his wife to find him following his disappearance and her complete devastation in the wake of his vicious death.
