Director Wolfgang Petersen finally has the luxury of time and editing control to provide the film he intended - more studied portraits of the characters involved (especially Pitt's Achilles) amid sex and violence. When Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) absconds with his lover, the beautiful Spartan queen Helen (Diane Kruger), the stage is set for a bloody conflict between Troy's armies, led by Paris' brother Hector (Eric Bana), and a Greek invasion force under the command of greedy King Agamemnon (Brian Cox), whose chief asset Achilles marches to the beat of his own drum.
