Arn: The Knight Templar

Swedish-made film (first of an intended trilogy) about Arn (Joakim Natterqvist), the son of a high-ranking Swedish nobleman who after being educated in a monastery, falls in love with the beautiful Cecilia (Sofia Helin) and hopes for a happy peaceful life. Unfortunately, fate intervenes and Arn is sent to the Holy Land as a Knight Templar to do penance for his forbidden love. Not just another historical epic, religious drama or love story, this is a beautifully filmed, complex interweaving of all these elements involving family honour, religious injustice and the harshness of life in the time of the Crusades. Co-starring Stellan Skarsgaard, Simon Callow, Vincent Perez and Bibi Andersson.
