Director Stanley Kubrick directed this tale of the slave rebellion that took place in 71 B.C., led by the famous and indomitable gladiator, Spartacus, who defeated several Roman armies sent against him. The screenplay was written by the legendary Dalton Trumbo, based on the book by Howard Fast. Out of 167 days shooting, six weeks were spent on a single battle sequence, involving 8,500 extras. Kubrick, brought in after Douglas fell out with original director Anthony Mann, felt the script was full of unnecessary moralising, but had no control over it - since then he has always retained complete creative control over his projects. 'I am Spartacus!'.
